The tragic story of a pedestrian who was struck by a tour bus and dragged 50 feet that resulted in his death was made even more egregious when the bus driver left the scene of the accident without stopping.  Such outrageous conduct on the part of a private bus company raises serious questions about the viability of a punitive damage claim.  This accident brings back haunting memories for me since my grandfather was similarly struck while walking in Manhatten where he had been a police officer for over 30 years.  Although he did not die immediately, his eventual committment to a nursing home was believed to be related to the accident and his pre-mature death at age 68.

There were unconfirmed reports that the man was dragged several dozen feet by the bus, and that it was a white tour bus with tinted windows.

From there, the bus dragged the man 50 feet, scattering his shoes and headphones. It turned on to the ramp to I-95 and continued, police believe, to Washington.

Pedestrians have the right of way at that intersection as there are no traffic lights there.
