In the fourth suit to be filed in the month of March, 2011, Dan Monahan, attorney for a former Northeast Philadelphia altar boy, alleges in the Complaint against the Archdiocese of Philadelphia that his client, only identified as John Doe 168 to protect his identity, was sexually absed between the years 1988 and 1991 by Msgr. John Gillespie, then pastor of Our Lady of Calvary Church along Knights Road. This was the second claim alleging that Msgr. Gillespie was the perpetrator. According to the Grand Jury Report issued by the District Attorney’s office in 2005 and 2011, Msgr. Gillespie had been identified by the Archdiocese as a suspected child abuser. Nevertheless, he was not removed from ministry until 2001. Since then Msgr. Gillespie has died.
A new sexual abuse lawsuit was filed Monday against the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, Cardinal Justin Rigali and other archdiocese staffers on behalf of a Delaware man who grew up in Philadelphia, clergy abuse attorneys said.
Phil Gaughan claims the Reverend John E. Gillespie sexually abused him from 1994 to 1997 while attending Our Lady of Calvary parish in Philadelphia, according to the civil complaint.
Gaughan, now 31, came forward because of his 7-year-old son, he said Monday at a news conference in front of City Hall.
In the first civil lawsuit filed against the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in the aftermath of the Philadelphia Grand Jury’s 2011 Report, a 28 year old man, identified only as John Doe 10 alleges that he was sexually abused by Martin Satchell (pictured at right), an archdiocesan seminarian at the time, as a child while a student at St. Aloysius in Bryn Mawr, and again later by Father Richard Cochrane while he attended Malvern Preparatory School, an Augustinian high school. Fr. Cochrane was already convicted of child sexual abuse prior to this lawsuit based on the abuse of another child. [Read more…]
